A Frustrating Few Moments With Wordpress December 25, 2005
OK, I really, really hope that no-one’s picked up on this site and started pulling it through RSS yet. If you have, I apologise for the batch of “testing” posts you’ve just had pushed into the feed!
To explain it in case you’ve seen it, and for my own reference later, here’s what just happened:
Testing
Scenario:
- Installed Jerome’s keywords. Great plugin. All seems well.
- Noticed that “Blog Stuff” category didn’t have a category page.
- Created a new post in that category to see if it caused the category page to generate - it didn’t.
- Deactivated the plugin - homepage freezes after one post due to the tags code I’d added.
- Removed tags code.
- Now creating a new post, in a new category, to see what happens.
I don’t see any reason that it would be connected to the plugin, but basic troubleshooting always starts with “what’s changed?” - so, I want to see what happens by backing out one step.
Update 1: OK… The new post is in the right category, and the category page has been created. This is good. Next step - remove the “Blog Stuff” category to push stuff back to the default category, create another new category, this time from the Dashboard/Manage rather than from within the editor, and see what happens.
Continuing The Test
- Creating a category in the admin tool and then moving a post into the category doesn’t create the archive page.
- Creating a category in the writing tool and then moving the post into that category doesn’t create the archive page.
- Next effort is to post a brand-new message into the (already existing) category page, and see if this works.
Still Testing
- That previous test didn’t work.
- This time, I’ve deleted the category from the site, and left the posts that were in the category previously in the default category that they’ve moved to.
- In creating this post, I’m going to recreate the “Blog Stuff” category, post this into it, and see what happens.
Update: THAT didn’t work either. Does Wordpress and/or Yahoo just not like my category of “Blog Stuff”? Creating another new one, from the Write Post dialog, this time called “Blog”. Of course, I’m also editing a post rather than creating a new one, so we’ll see.
Something Random
New category, created at write time, called “Something Random” (because I want to specifically test two word category names against the one word “Testing” category I used a few minutes ago).
Blog Related
This time, I’m going to try and create a category called “Blog Related”, as the “Something Random” test worked. This is VERY strange stuff.
Didn’t Work
So, shooting for “Weblogs”. Maybe it doesn’t like the word “Blog”? I can’t see a place where it’s conflicting with the URL paths or anything, but who knows…
And so, here we are now…
- The site allowed me to create a category of “Weblogs”, and created the correct Category Archive page for it.
- I moved another post into the new category, and it correctly shows up on the Category Archive page.
- I’m going to delete all those test posts in a moment!
- And then I’m going to re-activate Jerome’s Keywords, and reinsert the code into index.php to take my categories and other keywords and turn them into Technorati keywords.
On the one hand, “job done”. On the other - I don’t completely know what happened here, or whether it’ll happen again. It does seem that I can’t have a category at the moment(?), that starts with “blog”…
Ah well
